About WEAD’s enhanced Artist Directory

In 2006, WEAD transitioned from a paper Artist Directory to a web-based directory. While it was innovative for that time, it relied on custom code that had become increasingly out of date and time consuming to update.

Our web team recently finished a multi-year process of transitioning the directory from the original custom code to WordPress plug-ins. These plug-ins provide greater security and enhanced functionality. They also allowed us to automate many processes that were completed manually by staff and volunteers in the other system.

Some of the new features include:

  • More detailed search options
  • Student-level membership option
  • Mobile-friendly access
  • Enhanced options for privacy, including the option to hide your email address
  • Gallery view for portfolio images
  • Enhanced image captions
  • Automated receipts and renewal reminders
  • Potential for online store (not yet developed)

As part of the final steps of this transition, we urge you to go check out your profile! You will need to be a current member to make any changes. We ask that you review your member profile and update the following:

  • Geographic region
  • Privacy settings
  • Issues and disciplines
  • Online survey (which will pop up when you login)

Please note that new member’s galleries and updated galleries are now limited to 15 images. Images are limited to 4 MB (i.e., 4000 x 4000 pixels at 13 x 13 inches). If your gallery currently has more than 15 images or has images that are larger than 4MB, those will remain in place. However, if you update your gallery, you will be limited to a total of 15 images and your images will need to be 4MB or less. Also note that the video display functionality is a work in progress.

We also transitioned our online membership payments and donations from PayPal to Stripe. Payments are now processed via Stripe or check via mail. If your membership is set to renew automatically via PayPal, it will still renew automatically. We will reach out to you directly if or when that changes.

Many volunteer hours went into this project. We’d like to thank board members Christina Bertea, Mary White, Tanja Geis, Isabella La Rocca González, Minoosh Zomorodinia, and web expert Will Heublein for all the hours and expertise they brought to this project. In addition, staff members Kasha Frese and Anna McGaraghan provided excellent project management and coordination. WEAD also extends great thanks to Christina Black of R3C Creations, the web developer who brought this project across the finish line in the last year.

This project was made possible with funding from the California Arts Council, Alameda County Arts Commission, Berkeley Civic Arts Program, and individual WEAD donors. Thank you for your support!

We are developing a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ), so please reach out to email info@weadartists.org with any questions you have.
