Zohre Solati

Artist Statement / Bio

Zohre Solati, a mother of a teenage son, is an Iranian media artist and sociological documentary photographer who is both the subject and the creator of her work. “I see my body as part of the work,” she says, “as if I am simultaneously the subject and the maker.” She sees herself as an essential part of each piece, using art to understand her identity and its complexities. Solati hopes viewers find parts of themselves in her work. She believes that despite the systematic oppression of women and the layered discrimination they face in Iran, we must persist, continue creating, and never give up.

She is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice focuses on themes of femininity, identity, affect, and sociopolitical structures within patriarchal contexts. With an academic background in Fine Arts, Solati employs a cross-disciplinary approach integrating photography, performance, and body art, blending conceptual aesthetics with documentary realism.

In November 2024, Solati completed an international fellowship at the Chicago-based Goldin Institute – Global Fellows Program, where she conducted advanced research in interdisciplinary and socially engaged art. She continues to serve as an affiliated artist and alumna of the fellowship.

Solati’s long-term photo-performance project, This Is Who I Am (2019–ongoing), explores self-representation, transformation, and lived experience. Her work confronts cultural taboos and investigates themes of family, geography, and politics.

Her performance work was recently featured in the article “The Gestural Feminism of Iranian Women” by Dr. Pamela Karimi (Cornell University), published in Hyperallergic, and is also included in Karimi’s academic book Women, Art, Freedom (Leuven University Press, 2024).
