Joan Zalenski

Artist Statement / Bio

I am currently interested in producing large photographic images on various surfaces (e.g. glass fusion). I have also experimented with some non-silver processes on fired ceramics and unfired bisque tiles. In addition to photography and 2-dimensional work,  I also produce 3-dimensional and site-specific installations and sculpture. I have been doing public art projects for many years and continue to engage myself in the public art arena.  I am now moving in the direction of integrating the photography with the 3-D work for public art projects. I don't think of myself as a photographer, but an artist with a camera, using photographic techniques as my current tools.  By using the camera to record an instant in time, all the details that you forget when you blink are captured by the camera, providing a surprising palette to work with.

I am very concerned about the environment and dismayed at how little one person's voice alone can do.  My work has always had a political slant to it using sarcasm and humor.  The most effective way for me to speak out is through my work.  While public art projects can restrict this at times, my personal and commissioned work allows me more freedom to make stronger statements.
