Artist Statement / Bio

My work in drawing, painting, pigments, and tool-making creates a mythic space where elements of architecture, geology, man, and nature mingle, and where forms and materials carry their own intelligences. Working with handcrafted pigments and tools foraged from earth and stone, my work recognizes a world much older and wilder than ourselves.
My practice approaches deep time as a rewilding strategy, using earthen abstraction to unsettle anthropocentric ways of seeing. By collapsing distinctions between elemental and built environments, and between waking and dreaming, the work reframes human experience as embedded within living material systems whose intelligence extends beyond human notions of time. Taking cues from art history and visual culture, my dimensional, textured abstractions in drawing, painting, and printmaking contrast drawn motifs of architecture with monolithic stone and formless fluid shapes to entangle the material human and built worlds with myths and tales of matter, the living, the inert, the ephemeral, and the lasting. I coalesce with the natural elements through observational drawing, foraged pigments, inks, and handmade watercolors to echo and honor the endeavors of people who, through craft and story, conjure harmonious ways to communicate their place in the cosmos. My work positions craft and handmaking as forms of thinking and as ways of engaging with and creating new forms of knowledge.
