Judy Richardson

My ideas are about the things that stay constant in human history; my work is composed of the forms and textures that speak of the wonders of the everyday. Sculptures are built, assembled, and cast with familiar materials like wood, wire, metal, and concrete. I re-use building materials, and find that the world is so full of things that there is hardly any need to buy anything new.  Sometimes my need to make work comes from the outside world, sometimes from personal feelings.  My sculpture refers to structure, and often architecture, based on many years of work on opera scenery.  I look at lots of classical references, and make my own versions of them.  I believe in the mark of the human hand, and the beauty of human error. Human history indicates that we need to be artists and builders, ingenious people who build with what is available to them, by any means necessary
